Hawthorn Football Club is pleased to announce Captain Sam Mitchell and forwards Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin have all signaled their commitment to the brown and gold, re-signing with the Club today.
Sam Mitchell has extended his contract for two years, while Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin have committed to the Club for a further four and three years, respectively.
Hawthorn’s Chief Executive Stuart Fox said the trio’s signings sends a strong message to the rest of the playing group and Hawthorn members.
“Re-signing our Club captain and two star forwards delivers a tremendously strong message of player commitment to the Club and our aspirations for success,” Fox said.
“Today’s announcement is a significant commitment from three great players who will play an important part in the long-term future of the Hawthorn Football Club and provides us with a strong framework moving forward.”
Premiership player and Club Captain Sam Mitchell made his AFL debut in 2002 and won the AFL Rising Star Award in 2003.
The two-time Peter Crimmins Medallist said he had no hesitation in re-committing to the Hawks.
“As a team, we’re looking forward to building on past success and I’m glad to have my place on the journey secured for the next couple of years.”
Roughead, who was drafted to the Club in 2004 along with Franklin, was also delighted to confirm his future would be in the brown and gold.
“We have a great team, with a mix of promising youngsters and experienced senior players, and I’m thrilled to be one of three players today to commit for the long-term,” said Roughead.
“There is a belief within our team that we can achieve further success if we remain a committed, stable and cohesive group and I’m pleased that my contract extension will ensure I play my role within that team for many years to come.”
Despite protracted media speculation about Hawks forward Lance Franklin’s future and interest from the AFL’s new franchises, Franklin has signaled his commitment to the Club for the next three years.
“My future at Hawthorn was never in doubt,” said Franklin.
“I love playing footy with my mates and, despite a rough patch right now, I have enjoyed every part of my journey with the Hawks so far.”
“I’m really pleased my contract extension has coincided with Sam’s and Jarryd’s as we’re all extremely committed to the future success of the Club and want to achieve more as a team.”
Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson said the re-signing of Mitchell, Roughead and Franklin sent a positive message to the rest of the playing group.
“These three young men have shown great commitment to the Club and a desire to build upon our past achievements,” Clarkson said.
“The Club is none too pleased with our current form, but this is another indication that we are all committed to putting things right as we continue this journey that we all started together some time ago.”
